Cherating Point, supported by surf brand Volcom Malaysia, is one of the more established surf school in Cherating, Kuantan. During the surf season, Cherating Point is in full swing with surf lessons and board rentals. Cherating Point operates from MataHari Chalets, a little guesthouse that is quiet, local, simple and green enough for those who enjoys fuss-free travelling.
Matahari Chalets is located off the beach in Cherating village. It can be a bit tricky to find because it is not located on the main road, but ask for the bar called Little Bali and you would be able to spot MataHari Chalet right opposite it. And yes, if you were wondering, they have wifi in the lobby.
The kampung-style wooden chalets here is simple and bare, nothing luxurious but definitely sleep-able for a few nights. You have your mosquito nets, your beds, a fan, and the sound of the crickets at night. Fret not about not having AC, because it gets quite chilly at night. However, you might want to look elsewhere if you don’t like to share toilets. No food here, but restaurants and the beach are just a few minutes away by foot.
Cherating Point instructors, mostly local guys, are experienced, very friendly, and patient but will not pamper you, which is a good thing when it comes to learning something new. The instructors’ teaching style is more practical than anything else. They’ll give you little pointers here and there as you keep trying until you get it. They have fun boards, longboards and short boards for rent.
Did I mention they are friendly? Have a chat with them and they have all the surf stories to tell you. Surf stories told with a passion.
Cherating Point has a few surfing+room packages available. My cousins and I decided on the weekend package- RM270 for two 1 and a half hour surfing lessons plus one night’s stay at MataHari Chalet. This includes board rental, rash guard, and a photo of your first stand! Sweet!
Most importantly, they have a cat. A beautiful, fat, orange cat.
